Among the first of the American automobile manufacturers, Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company was founded in 1899 by David Dunbar Buick in Jackson, Michigan. Buick Motor Company was incorporated in 1903 in Detroit and became the best-selling automobile brand in the United States by 1905, due in large part to its patented overhead valve engine, which was unusual for the time. Buick was the first acquisition of the new General Motors Company in 1908 founded by William C. Durant.
Although Buick’s sales dipped following the great depression, after World War II, sales rose rapidly due to styling and engineering advancements, including the introduction of the first torque converter automatic transmission. Known for such iconic nameplates as Roadmaster, Riviera, Regal, and Skylark, not to mention the powerhouses GSX and Grand National, Buick has cemented itself in the annals of American automotive history.
