Shelby American was founded in 1962 by veteran race car driver and champion, Carroll Shelby. Known for its iconic Ford powered Cobra, as well as the high-performance Shelby GT 350 and GT 500 Ford Mustangs, Shelby American became a dominant force in sports car racing in the 1960s. Buoyed by the racing success of the Cobra (including the Cobra Daytona Coupe, which finished first in the GT class at the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, besting Ferrari), Ford Motor Company tapped Shelby American to take over its foundering GT40 program in 1965. With Carroll Shelby at the helm, the Shelby American GT40 team earned Ford its first International Manufacturer's Championship in 1966, with wins at Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans.
